The idea could have been used to make a pretty good action movie, with a little bit better worked out storyline, and much better casting. However, this film lacks action and the storyline went steadily down hill from beginning to end. But the performance of Ryan O'Neal just irritated me along with a few of the others with such bad over-acting that it was painful to watch. When the Earth is menaced by a mysterious rock that bursts suddenly. He managed to actually act here, which he is not allowed to do often, and I think he is underrated as an actor. Suspense, Action & Adventure, Science Fiction. I especially enjoyed Brian Thompson, which we have seen in so many TV shows (Star Trek, X-File). It had a weird balance between comedy and action, which I don't think really worked here, and even though some wit is good, they should have kept it more realistic. There were some parts that irritated me though, mostly to do with the government, which seemed to be filled with idiots. The main actors did well, keeping their conversation fast paced and witty. What saved this film was pretty good idea and not too bad script. Anthropocene: The Human Epoch offers a sobering - and visually ravishing - look at the horrific ecological damage wrought by modern human civilization. A top-secret weapons specialist must unravel the secret behind a towering alien structure that appears suddenly, hovering above the earth. So in some ways I was surprised, as the result was much better then I expected. A cinematic meditation on humanitys massive reengineering of the planet, ANTHROPOCENE: The Human Epoch is a four years in the making feature documentary. Egos and feuds and trash talk are what has elevated so many other sports. Watching Clark and Van Lith trying to provoke the other is fun as hell to watch. Immediately, the trolls and internet keyboard jockeys - who only pay attention to women’s sports when there’s something to bash - jumped aboard the “disrespecting the game” train. In music, she can perfect her tracks in the studio until they’re exactly what she wants. Earlier this week, she spoke about how her confidence took a major hit this season when she took her lumps on the court. How it was the kind of performance that literally every young athlete dreams of - in her final college game, in the national championship - and she goes off for that kind of a performance. How she hit five 3s, including a leaner that banked off the glass to end the first half that made you wonder if this team - which never shot 3s like this - had just trolled everyone all season to get to this point. How the fifth-year senior, who had laid goose eggs in five of the Tigers’ previous seven games (including three NCAA Tournament games), shot 7 of 8. We simply couldn’t let Jasmine Carson dominate the conversation. With that, how could anyone allow themselves to dwell on the unexpected national champion that was crowned? Or the runners-up who were fun as hell to watch, too? As it became clear the Tigers were closing in on their first national championship, she looked at Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, waved her hand in front of her face (the same John Cena “You Can’t See Me” wave Clark had done earlier in the tournament) and pointed to her ring finger. One woman, in particular - LSU’s Angel Reese - had the audacity to show some emotion and talk some trash. As usual, Karl Denninger has the details at the Market Ticker: mortgage scandal is on the verge of entering the next stage, which threatens both the banking industry and the housing market. But just as Roubini has been late on the developing eurodisaster, he’s probably too generous in thinking that it’s going to take five years for nations to begin leaving the Euro.Ĭomplicating matters is the fact that it looks like the U.S. Ireland and Portugal aren’t much better off. Greece’s credit rating was recently reduced to CCC. But now convergence is gone, reform is stalled, while fiscal and political union is a distant dream. The eurozone was glued together by the convergence of low real interest rates sustaining growth, the hope that reforms could maintain convergence and the prospect of eventual fiscal and political union. Yet scenarios that are treated as inconceivable today may not be so far-fetched five years from now, especially if some of the periphery economies stagnate. Exit would impose big trade losses on the rest of the eurozone, via major real depreciation and capital losses on the creditor core, in much the same way as Argentina’s “pesification” of its dollar debt did during its last crisis. Of course today the idea of leaving the euro is treated as inconceivable, even in Athens and Lisbon. After all, in all those emerging market financial crises that restored growth a move to flexible exchange rates was necessary and unavoidable on top of official liquidity, austerity and reform and, in some cases, debt restructuring and reduction. So given these three options are unlikely, there is really only one other way to restore competitiveness and growth on the periphery: leave the euro, go back to national currencies and achieve a massive nominal and real depreciation. Nouriel Roubini finally latches onto the fact of the collapsing European currency: The so-called moral argument for free trade to which many Libertarians appeal is not only unjust, overtly anti-American, and anti-Constitutional, it is an important tool in the service of one of the most fundamentally evil concepts in the history of humanity, a centralized international government with global authority. This means that contrary to the way in which equality of opportunity is to be preferred to equality of result, liberty of result is to be preferred to liberty of opportunity.įurthermore, it is no more intrinsically unjust that foreign corporations are forced to pay a tariff in order to sell their wares – or even not be permitted to sell them at all – than foreigners who are not resident in the USA are not permitted to vote for the U.S. It is not desirable that everyone be the same, whereas it is desirable that everyone have the maximal amount of personal freedom. But liberty, unlike equality, is a desired net outcome. There is a difference between liberty of opportunity and liberty of result. What Fletcher is saying without specifically articulating it is a variant on a point I have previously made with regards to abortion and immigration. Anyhow, Fletcher’s casual observation connecting Babel and globalism is one that should give any Christian, libertarian or not, food for thought. But as one prominent libertarian has now seen through the free trade delusion that generally grips his fellow libertarians, this is probably a good time to explain what he got and they didn’t.įollowers? I have followers? And here I thought I merely had Ilk. I’m not qualified to speak to the “Christian” aspects of free trade – whatever those are – beyond observing that globalism, of which free trade is a part, certainly looks like the Tower of Babel. This did not go over well with some of his followers. He followed it up with an article making many of the same points. I recently gave a podcast interview to Vox Day, a prominent Christian libertarian, explaining why free trade is bad for America. Ian Fletcher takes on the free trade Libertarians at WND: The monument is an imposing 21 metre high and 25.6 m wide rectangular block of grey and white Proconnesian marble consisting of three separate arches: one larger central arch with a shorter and narrower arch ( fornix) on either side. The arch was dedicated on 25th July 315 CE on the 10th anniversary of Constantine’s reign ( Decennalia) and stood on Rome’s triumphal route. The arch is also a tour de force of political propaganda, presenting Constantine as a living continuation of the most successful Roman emperors, renowned for their military victories and good government. It is the largest surviving Roman triumphal arch and the last great monument of Imperial Rome. 315 CE, stands in Rome and commemorates Roman Emperor Constantine’s victory over the Roman tyrant Maxentius on 28th October 312 CE at the battle of Milvian Bridge in Rome. The Arch is a huge conglomerate of imperial Roman sculpture as many parts of it were recycled (spolia) from earlier 1st and 2nd century CE monuments. Photo by Mark Cartwright, Creative Commons It is the largest surviving triumphal arch and the last great Imperial Roman monument. Dedicated in 315 CE, the triumphal arch celebrates the emperor’s victory over the Roman tyrant Maxentius in 312 CE. There are times, such as during the period of the 'soldier emperors' in the 3rd century CE, when the rate of artistic production falls off due to political instability, but the overall quality of the surviving pieces is still high and in keeping with imperial art of earlier periods. The north side of the Arch of Constantine I in Rome. The Romans had need of changing means and manners of expression. In some cases we read archaism and abstraction and think these are less developed or less advanced than naturalism or classicism, but if we do that, we inject too much in the way of bias into the question. Changing priorities, changing ideas and philosophies require new art forms. This is true of transitions in Roman art that occur during the late third / fourth centuries CE, and then in the fifth-seventh centuries CE. In the Roman world, stylistic shifts in art production generally respond to other sets of shifting priorities and ideas. These arguments have been strongly rejected by art historians. While changing styles are evident in antiquity, it is unwise to judge stylistic change as a sign of social or technical or economic decline. Likewise, Neoclassical architecture is still commissioned. You seriously underestimate the art scene in 2016, as many artists work in marble carving and other stone-carving. Each of these religions brought its own unique sets of imagery to inform proper worship and instruct their sect’s followers. Gods and religions from other parts of the empire also made their way to Rome’s capital including the Egyptian goddess Isis, the Persian god Mithras and ultimately Christianity. Religious art is also included in this category, such as the cult statues placed in Roman temples that stood in for the deities they represented, like Venus or Jupiter. They could also depict an emperor’s successes in domestic and foreign policy rather than in war, such as Trajan’s Arch in Benevento. They also revealed foreign lands and enemies of the state. The arches and columns (like the Arch of Titus or the Column of Trajan), marked victories, depicted war, and described military life. There are also commemorative works like the triumphal arches and columns that served a didactic as well as a celebratory function. The public sphere is filled with works commissioned by the emperors such as portraits of the imperial family or bath houses decorated with copies of important Classical statues. He was also adapting in a conscious and brilliant way. It is precisely this ability to adapt, convert, combine elements and add a touch of humor that makes Roman art Roman. But the Roman artist was not simply copying. From the direct reporting of the Greeks to the utilitarian and humorous luxury item of a Roman enthusiast, Marsyas made quite the journey. A knife was the very element that would have been used to flay the poor satyr, demonstrating not only the owner’s knowledge of Greek mythology and important statuary, but also a dark sense of humor. So, for example, a famously gruesome Hellenistic sculpture of the satyr Marsyas being flayed was converted in a Roman dining room to a knife handle (currently in the National Archaeological Museum in Perugia). The variations could be made with humor, taking the serious and somber element of Greek art and turning it on its head. The copies, however, were more often variations rather than direct copies, and they had small changes made to them. The Romans did not believe, as we do today, that to have a copy of an artwork was of any less value that to have the original. |
